Chapter Two
The Bubble
As usual, my brother Zach and my sister Blinn were teaming up against me in a game of hide-and-seek throughout the house. I was hiding in my grandfather’s study which was off limits to all of us, but it was the perfect place to hide! I could hear them wandering through the house as they were getting closer to the study.
“Got ya!” said Zach as he threw open the study door. “I knew you’d be in here. Didn’t I tell you, Blinn?”
“Yeah, you were right,” she said. “He always has to go where we’re not supposed to be.” As they turned to leave, Blinn noticed something. “Oh, look! What is this thing, Sam?” she asked me pointing to a big clear sphere next to the desk.
“I don’t know… I wonder what it is, let’s take a look!” I said. I really was intrigued by this bubble. It was round, made of some sort of see-through plastic. Inside, there were some chairs and a big cockpit-like display with lots of knobs, handles and a joystick. All of us circled the bubble and looked for a way to get inside.
“Here is the opening.” I said, pointing to a door on the opposite side of the bubble. “I’ll go in first and then you guys can go.”
“Why can’t we all go at the same time?” asked Zach.
“Fine. But don’t touch anything, all right?” I told them. Zach touches everything that crosses his path, he just can’t help it.
There was a red plastic button with “OPEN” written on it located inside a little dent on the door. Blinn pushed the button and the door slid open. We all went inside the bubble. The first thing that caught my attention was the dashboard full of knobs and buttons. Zach noticed a laptop computer on a side table and Blinn checked out the chairs. “Why do the chairs have seat belts?” she wondered out loud.
“Sam, why is there an ant on the computer screen?” asked Zach. I looked up and read what was on the computer.
It said: touch here to start.
“But, Zach, don’t do it!” I warned him.
“Oops!...I accidently touched the screen…” he said.
All of a sudden, everything went pitch-black and was starting to move in all directions. It felt like we were standing inside a big plastic ball rolling down a hill.
“Quick, sit down in a chair and buckle up the seat belt” I yelled.
We each threw ourselves in a chair and fastened our seat belts. Once the tumbling stopped, everything was quiet and still. It was still dark outside the bubble but at least we could see each other.
“Great Zach, now you did it! How are we going to explain this to Grandpa?” I asked him completely annoyed looking all around.
“I don’t know…” he answered. He was very scared and almost crying. I became a little nervous myself once I realized we were no longer in the study and decided it was time to get out of the bubble. I got up to leave but there was no door.
“Zack, Blinn, wasn’t the door right here? I can’t find it!?”
