Chapter Three
Talking to the ants
“AHHH!…….WHAT IS THIS?” Zach screamed jumping out of his seat. A big round head with two black eyes looking at us stood in front of the bubble. Underneath them and attached to the head was some sort of appendage that resembled tweezers, like the ones my Mom uses. Above the eyes were two big antennas sticking straight up in the air.
“Looks like a giant ant to me.” replied Blinn with a shaky voice. Although she loves animals, the size of this one was terrifying her. “What’s going on? What are we going to do?” she asked.
“Let’s all calm down” I said, “I’m sure there is a way out of here, we just have to find it”. I was trying to be reassuring to keep us from panicking. How could we be face-to-face with an ant, it didn’t make any sense. Had we been transported to a place with giant ants or had we shrank down to the size of an ant?
Then, the ant lowered her two antennas to put them on our bubble. We held our breath waiting for the ant to attack us, but instead it just kept still.
“Look Sam, there is something on the monitor of the computer. What does it say?” asked Blinn pointing to the laptop. I started to read what was written:
Help! There is a big flood up ahead. Be careful. We are trying to contain it and move the Queen to safety. Pass message along. Follow me and be careful.
“What does that mean? Where are we anyway?” asked Zach looking all around the bubble.
“Maybe the ant is talking to us through the computer. Ants use their antennas to communicate with each other” said Blinn. “That means that she thinks that we are an ant!”
We looked outside around the bubble and realized that it had taken the shape of an ant. Two big antennas were attached to the bubble, slightly above us. We were probably sitting in the head part of the ant because just behind the bubble was what looked like the abdomen and attached to it on either side were three skinny legs. We were sitting high above the ground like pilots in the cockpit of an airplane.
“Let’s try to answer her using our antennas” suggested Blinn.
“How will we do that, Blinn” I asked her.
“Maybe we should type something on the computer and see what happens.” Zach butted in.
“Good idea. Maybe Grandpa improved his last invention by allowing people to communicate with animals.” I said. “What should we type?”
“We should be friendly so that the ant won’t be mad at us. Some ants can be very aggressive at times” said Blinn.
I was about to type the first word, which could have taken a while since I don’t know how to type, when Zach noticed the microphone symbol on the computer.
“Sam, is this computer voice activated like Daddy’s?” Zach asked, “If so, we could talk into the microphone and save time.”
“Maybe. Let’s try it.” I said, clicking the microphone symbol. “We can talk now and the computer will just type what we say.”
“We need to find a name for our ant-shaped bubble.” Zach suggested. “We can’t tell the ant that the three of us are sitting inside the head because she’ll attack us for sure!”
“Well, does anyone have any suggestions?” I asked.
“What about Bubble-Head?” Zach asked. “It kinda describes us.”
“Hum…What do you think about that, Blinn?” I asked her. “I think that it’s a great name.”
Blinn nodded. “Hi, my name is Bubble-Head. I’m not sure you can understand me.” She said, “But I definitely want to help you.”
The computer typed up the message and I pushed the ENTER button. The monitor went blank with only a little dash blinking at the top left corner. And then there was another message on the screen.
My name is Trap-Jaw. My job is to defend the Queen. She is in danger. We moved her five floors down, but the water is still coming. We need to move her to another colony. Thanks for your help.
I read the message to them.
