Chapter One
“You can see you us... can't you?” He purred in the brown haired boy’s ear, the green eyes stayed glued to the board, as his long hands dutifully copied down the notes.
“You can hear me.” The boy made no indication of doing so. “You can feel this...” A hand creeped along his sharp jaw and it took all of the boys will not to flinch or clench his teeth automatically. “Listen to me.” The voice hissed, digging into the pale skin, the boy was unable to stop the flinch and yelp of pain causing the teacher to stop speaking and stare at him. In fact, the whole class was staring at him now.
“Kellen, do you have something to say?”
“Ah.. no, sir.” Kellen murmured lowering his bright green eyes to the desk; the room erupting in whispers. This just proves to everyone, that I am indeed a crazy kid.
“Then please refrain from making noise in the middle of my lecture.” His teacher deadpanned. Kellen wrinkled his nose but kept his eyes down until the teacher started talking again. Ignore it and it’ll go away...
“Thought so.” Whisper smiled triumphantly. “Don’t ignore me and I won’t touch you anymore.”
Kellen pretended he didn’t hear and started back up on his notes. I can't hear it. I can't see it. Just my mind playing tricks on me. Hallucinating, yup. Whisper clicked his tongue, annoyed. He smiled deviously and casually kicked the leg of the boy’s chair - hard - tipping it.
“Wah!” Kellen found himself and his notebook on the floor, a clattering sound filling the air.
“Kellen Nero! I’m tired of your interruptions in my class! Go to the office!” The teacher snapped, irritated as Kellen pulled himself up to his knees, looking up at the teacher and then shooting a glance at the brown and purple haired demon that had been following him for the last hour before his eyes flickered down. He picked himself and the chair up, slinging his bag over his shoulder.
“Sorry, sir.” Kellen said, trudging out of the classroom, shrinking into himself as the words of the students followed him. He shut the door behind him and started to silently make his way to the fourth floor office. Whisper followed close behind the boy, smiling like he might laugh.
“I warned you.” He shrugged. “So say something. It’s obvious you can hear and see me clear as day.”
Kellen’s hand clenched over the strap of his backpack and his lips pressed into a thin line. Walking and ignoring. Though... this was only the second time he had ever seen a demon that could hold a full human body... did that mean it was more powerful...? Probably why he realized Kellen had the sight without him actually giving any major indicators.
“Hey.” Whisper narrowed his eyes and grabbed the boy’s shoulder, shoving him into the wall. “I’m talking to you.” He stated, irritated. Kellen let out a little yelp in surprize, staring up at the Demon in a bit of shock. The emotion swiftly vanished and he looked away, glaring at some random ‘inspirational’ poster on the other side of the wall. ಠ_ಠ
“Go away.” He said softly.
“No.” Whisper replied simply. “I want to talk to you.”
“Why? I’m a human...” Kellen’s eyebrows crinkled in confusion as he glanced back up at the demon, still a little in awe about how he looked... kind of angry and he had intense blue eyes. The demon had the physical attributes to someone about nineteen or twenty, hair brown on the left and fading into a light purple. Kellen wouldn’t have noticed he was a demon if not for the fact that he watched him walk threw an unaware human... he had stopped and stared for a moment, probably what gave him away in the first place.
“Because if you aren’t aware, not many of you silly humans can even see me.” he explained. “So, it has to be you.” He looked down at the boy staring back at him with bright green eyes from under a mess of fluffy brown hair. “Quit ignoring me. It’s rude.”
Kellen wrinkled his nose and pulled away from the demon, “go away.” He repeated, “I have nothing to say to you, and I have no care for any dark words that may spew from your mouth. You’ll make me all unholy or something.” Kellen declared.
“Dark words? I’ll make you unholy?” Whisper scoffed. “Silly human. Have I said anything dark to you thus far? I have simply asked you not to ignore me and I’d love to hear all about your silly human life.” He gave the boy an amused smile. “Haven’t you ever been curious about us?”
Kellen opened his mouth to answer and paused seeing some girl on the other end of the hall looking at him like he was mental... He turned on his heel and stomped away with a huff. There was no saving his middle school life now.
“Hey.” Whisper caught up with him following close behind. “I’m not going to go away, so whenever you’re feeling like less of a twat… Feel free to let me know.” He said dryly.
“I don’t want to tell you about my life, and I could care less about yours, now go find someone else to bother. I’m sure there are plenty of sinners you can go condemn and soul eat.” Kellen said harshly, taking the steps to the next floor two at a time.
“Ouch, the soul I apparently eat and or don’t have.” Whisper continued to follow him, putting a hand over his chest mockingly. “I’m not going to condemn you, nor am I going to eat your soul. You are being insufferably unreasonable. Fucking preconceptions about us. you wound me. I already told you, I’m not going to leave, so talk to me now or not, I will continue to keep you company until we have a decent conversation and I will accept nothing more and nothing less.”
Kellen reached the fourth floor and continued on his path to the principle, walking into the office and shutting the door in the demons face before approaching the office assistant. Whisper stopped short, unable to pass through the door. He let out an irritated huff, settling for leaning against the wall beside the door, listening in.
“Kellen... you’re here again...” The lady didn’t sound enthusiastic or surprised in the least. “Maybe you should go to the counselor again?” She said making Kellen give an annoyed huff.
“I haven't even said why i'm here.”
“Voices...right?”
“...No...I fell out of my chair and Mr. Tention thought that was a good enough reason to kick me out.” Yup, I will forever be known as the kid who sees and hears dead people.
“uh huh... just go, Kellen, why you bother to come up here is beyond me.” The lady grumbled as she started to type on the computer again. Kellen let out another irritated huff and stomped out of the office, ignoring the demon’s presents entirely in favor of angrily marching down the stairs he had painstakingly risen.
“Mhm. Still here. Jazz hands, happy faces and all that.” Whisper followed closely. “Hey, kid. Look, I apologize for getting you into trouble, but you don’t have to be a little prick about it. There I said sorry, happy?” Kellen stopped and spun on his heel glaring daggers at the Demon.
“No. I’m not. Go away.” He hissed tired of demons and angels ruining his life. Next thing he’d know and he’ll have to face fucking fairies and unicorns.
“If I swear to shut up until you are not immediately busy will you speak to me?” Whisper asked.
“I have been speaking to you.” He deadpanned. and only because you threw me into a wall... and touched my face.
“Yes, very rudely if I might add.” Whisper muttered. “Okay, new approach. Talk to me and I won’t make your life a living heaven.” He said, his eyebrows raising. Kellen paused staring at him awkwardly.
“What?”
“Heaven. Bright lights, boring perfection. Beautiful fucking angels and shit. Boring as fuck.”
“Thats... gross... I mean, uh, don't use heavens name in vain...?” He said lamely.
“Don’t use hell’s name in vain.” whisper shrugged. “Which do you think happens more often? Heaven doesn’t exactly have the bad rep that hell gets.” Kellen opened his mouth and then shut it. Then opened it again... before closing his mouth and turning and slowly continuing on his way - pondering.
Whisper followed. “Food for thought.” He shrugged. “But seriously kid, we need to talk.”
“About?” Kellen humored the demon half heartedly, if he answered, maybe it would go away.
“This and that.” He said vaguely, running a hand through his silky hair and glancing down at the boy.
“Your so descriptive it blew my mind.” Kellen said unamused.
“Glad you appreciate it.” whisper smiled, matching the boys tone mockingly. “But yeah, I’m serious. I want to know about your life and shit.”
“Fine. I wake up. I take a shower, get on the buss, go to school and get harassed by demons and angels alike. Happy?” Kellen said snappily.
“Really? Oh my Satan, that sounds boring. How the heaven do you fill the rest of your time? And I would like to kindly point out that I am not harassing you, you are being difficult and I am trying to have a conversation.”
“I was told in church to deny demons the chance to take over my soul least I burn in hell instead of waste away- I mean live a peaceful life in heaven.” Kellen pointed out.
“If I wanted to take over your soul, I would have by now. I am offended. Stop it. I’m not going to kill you or send you to hell or some shit. It doesn’t sound to me like you even want to go to heaven, Satan curse you. Jeez, waste away? You’re just a happy little guy aren’t you? Full of cheer and all that.”
Kellen let out a little breath of air, “my names not kid, or guy, its Kellen.”
“Kellen! See, that’s a start. My name is Whisper. It’s a pleasure to meet you, despite your currently shitty attitude.”
“Pleasure’s all mine.” Kellen said sarcastically as he opened the door to an empty classroom, shuffling in and slumping down at an empty desk. Whisper smiled excitedly, taking the seat beside him.
“So, Kellen. Is showering, being harassed and shit… that’s really all you do? Tell me more. Enlighten me. How long have you been able to see us?”
“Really, thats my average day and since I was born, I guess.” Kellen said dully, pulling a pillow out of his backpack and setting it on the desk, followed by his head, positioning it so he could kind of see Whisper.
“Hm. We’re going to change that. I want to be entertained.” He said, making a face.
“We, are not changing anything. I am going to go about my life like usual. I’m saving the excitement for when I burn in hell.” Kellen said with a yawn.
“Wow… really? It’s not that exciting.” Whisper’s face fell. “We are going to have some fun. Some real fun.” He corrected the boy.
“No. I don't want to.” Kellen disagreed.
“Come on. Don’t be a stiff.” Whisper got out of his seat and stood in front of Kellen, slamming his hands down on the desk. “It’s settled. My new personal goal is to make your life fun. Congratulations.”
“I don't do fun.” Kellen said unhappily.
“Oh, you’ll like my kind of fun. With an attitude like that. You don’t have any friends right? What do you actually have to lose.” Whisper shrugged, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans.
“Its because of creatures like you that I don't have any friends,” Kellen pointed out.
“Well then I’ll be your friend and you won’t have to worry about it.” Whisper offered. “That’s one more thing to cross off your list so we can start having some fuckin’ fun around here.”
Kellen lifted his head and stared at Whisper, “You... want to be my friend?” Whisper looked down at him, confused.
“Why wouldn’t I be, is there something wrong with you or something?”
“What? Me? But you... you're not supposed to want friends? I’m a human and you're a demon, it doesn't work that way.” Kellen said as if the demon was stupid about his own standing in life.
“Who the heaven are you to tell me what I should and shouldn’t want. All you silly humans and what you think you know about us. Half of it is just shit you made up to satisfy the holes in your theories and what you think you already know. It works however I want it to.”
“...If you say so...” Kellen said, not believing him at all.
“Look, do you want a satan cursed friend or not?” Whisper demanded, irritated. “There is nothing that says we can’t be.”
“...Sure. Why not. Its not like I'm going to heaven anyway.” Kellen said annoyed with the demons pestering.
“Oh? Why’s that, sweets?”
“Sweets?” Kellen focused on the word rather than the question, wondering if this was another reverse curse..?
“Mhm.” Whisper purred. “It’s sarcasm. You are being anything but sweet right now. I had always thought Human’s were… I don’t know… more fun-loving I guess?”
“And look, now i'm seeing preconception from you? After throwing such a fit about me having them? I'm disappointed.” Kellen deadpanned. Whisper sighed.
“You are already incredibly high maintenance. Maybe I should go find another kid who can see me that obviously wants and deserves a friend more than you right now. No wonder you’re alone. You’re so snippy.” whisper gave him a dark look.
“Please do go find some other kid who would deserve your friendship, it's not like I haven’t been saying that since I saw you.”
“Fine.” Whisper’s face fell into an expression halfway between irritated and bored. “Whatever.” He shoved his hands in his pockets and headed for the door, not looking back as he swung the door open and left the room.
Kellen let out a breath of air, looking down at his desk with a bit of a sad expression... before manning up and standing. He headed out of the classroom and made his way down to the second floor and his locker, frowning when he saw a group of big guys milling about in front of it... bullys. :T
Kellen approached his locker trying to be as sneaky as a tinny crazy kid could be.
“Hey, there he is. What do the voices say today smellin’?”
“Tch.” Kellen bit his lip to keep from replying to the insult, as worse things usually spawn from that, and tried to continue to his locker.
“Awe, don’t be like that. Jake’s just messin’ with ya.” Jesse smirked. He put his arm out, blocking Kellen’s path.
The mousy haired boy stopped and glared at Jesse’s arm like it killed his grandmother.
“Leave me alone.”
“How about, no.” Jake stepped up, looking him over. Jesse dropped his arm and half turned away before whipping around and slamming Kellen up against his own locker, taking a fistful of the smaller boy’s shirt.
“Did you just try and tell us what to do, freak?” he hissed. Kellen yelped and scrambled at the arm keeping him pinned to the lockers, the handle digging into his back as he tried to pry him off.
“Stop!” he yelped out pitifully, absolutely no match for the bigger boys. Jesse pulled him forward and slammed him backwards again, hard.
“I hate the weak.” He snarled, readying his fist. He drew back, ready to smash the smaller boy’s face in. He swung, or tried to but in imaginary force seemed to stay his hand.
Kellen squeezed his eyes shut, tensing in preparation... only for nothing to happen. He pried an eye open seeing Whisper, holding Jesse’s hand like it was nothing. He’d... helped him? He’d never seen a demon help someone... was he defective?
Whisper stared down at the bully, a look of disgust on his face. He squeezed the boy’s wrist with moderate force, smiling at the yelps he coaxed from the human’s lips. He pulled downward and threw the boy across the floor, watching with an amused expression as he slid across the tiles. He turned to the second human, waiting for him to try something.
“Hey, Kellen, tell ‘em you’re a witch.” He glanced over at the green eyed boy with a smirk and an expression that was almost… encouraging. Kellen stared at him like he was insane.
“I...I'm not going to tell them I’m a witch!” He said in a small voice.
“Why not? They might leave you alone and it’s not like they don’t already think you’re crazy.” Whisper shrugged. “If you’re going to be labeled crazy you might as well have fun with it.” Jesse looked at Kellen in disbelief. He cradled his injured wrist in his free hand and scrambled to his feet, Jake moving to stand beside him.
“Y...you… How did you…? He stammered.
“At least tell them to never mess with you again or else. Something?” Whisper said.
Kellen blinked and looked over at Jesse taking a step forward looking uneasy, “I... uh don't mess with me! I i'm a a.. uh unicorn! I mean witch! I'm a witch... don't mess with me...(∩`-´)⊃━☆゚.*・。゚” Whisper ran both hands over his face and shook his head slowly.
“It’s a start. We’ll work on it.” He said, giving the boy a light pat on the shoulder. “Don’t hesitate when you move. They smell fear...and so do I.” He said, giving him a half smile.
Kellen blinked and tried to stand straighter, “I - i'm not scared, demon.” He said with an annoyed glare at Whisper.
“That’s adorable, except for the fact that I really can smell it on you. Why do you think I came back…?” He stopped short, shutting his mouth abruptl

dutifully just had a skim
dutifully just had a skim through and you're very fond of ad-verbs (ly words) I would look to cutting most of them and use them only when they are essential to the sentence, ninety nine percent of the time they don't say anything or add anything to the writing.
Kellen pretended he didn’t hear and started back up on his notes. I can't hear it. I can't see it. Just my mind playing tricks on me. Hallucinating, yup...good, this has got my interest.
ಠ_ಠ... cute!
This is a great start... the writing is crude in places. It could use hardening up and tightening. Really need to lose the stars and smilies if you want to be taken seriously ... and you should want to. Your characterisation and interaction is great. The chapter jogs along at a good pace. I like the premise of a geeky kid having a demon as a friend and it held me beginning to end without me getting bored and wandering off. After the first chapter I'd like to read more and that's more than you can say about a lot of first chapters. Really good start. Thanks for the read.
