A sixpence song for empty pockets.

These words they freely give:

clean and un-be-grimmed færy tales

bland and blandished for your safe space,

your panic room, your adult’s womb.

No opinion, no challenge, no preparation

for your life, for any life.

 

An agreement with your every belief.

Such lies are simply told:

cheap and unrealistic fairy tales

polled and polished for your world view,

your single eye, your bigot’s lie.

One opinion, one party’s interpretation

for this life, for every life.

I see it everyday, Ewan. We actually have college campuses over here who will not let certain guest speakers have their say, lest they offend some of these cretins on campus. So much for free speech in an open society.

down my offered place at Liverpool University in 1979, the point of a University education was to teach students how to think and how to argue their case. If you never hear a dissenting opinion, how are you ever going to rebut it?

About 10 years ago I graduated from the Open University with a BA (Hons)Modern Languages & Linguistic Studies: now some of my opinions and views are not consonant with what is perceived as the official line at most Universities; however, I managed to argue my case sufficiently well in my assignments and projects to pass the course. My mind wasn't changed and neither were my tutors'. That's a good thing, I believe.

It's a bad road to go down, Rich. If you only ever listen to people who agree with you, you end up with Brexit and Trump, and get such a tremendous shock when you do.

Anyway, thanks for reading, ya big palooka!
