We'll See

I asked if you’d teach me to kick a ball
if you’d time to teach me the game,
but I learned to play just the same
while your No.1 hat still hung in the hall.
You never saw a match at all,
though even my brother watched a game
and I tried not to apportion the blame,
you always answered your country’s call.
So I gave up on your favourite sport,
became good at chasing a ball like an egg
and played it ‘til I became proud of me.
I wonder if you ever knew that I thought,
as I tried to plead and cajole and beg,
how I hated those dreadful words, “We’ll see.”

Two of my Dad's favourite words.
But generally they meant a good outcome for me.
Kind of brought back some memories. I hated (still do) football and my dad was pretty sad when I went to a school that played Rugby, I can't say I like Rugby either but at least I can sit through a game.

Yes, I did enjoy it. It
Yes, I did enjoy it. It reminded me of my daughter a few years ago saying the worst words ever were 'maybe...' My maybe usually came down to money but this poem seems more about not realising how brilliant childhood is and missing out on sharing it.
