Clair & John
Back in 77’ when I was eleven, and we all had long hair and flares and the Queen had just had a big party to celebrate 25 years.
A baby was born; his name was John Paul in a place called Cambridge, I think.
A cute little boy, a bundle of joy, all smiles and sweetness and wind!
A few years later in 82’ when “come on Eileen” topped the charts, a beautiful girl came into our lives and also into our hearts.
She was born in Devon but soon moved up North, to be near her family.
We know her as Clair, but she was actually christened Marie.
As the years rolled on by, they got on with their lives, not even knowing each other,
But then Clair moved to Cambridge in 97’ with her Sisters and her Mother.
Clair didn’t immediately settle, but she finally opted to stay, and had she not made that decision, we wouldn’t be here today!
So, We had Clair from up North and John from down South, and never the twain shall meet
but then fate came their way, in the train station cafe when John swept Clair off her feet.
They soon settled down to domestic bliss, you know with bills and no money, but then they wanted to marry, which in this day and age seems quite funny.
They worked and they worked, and they saved and they saved to make their dream come true.
That’s why we’re all here today and we witnessed them say “I love you” and “I Do”.
And tomorrow they fly off to sunnier climes and we’ll try not to show that we’re jealous, as we wave them goodbye, with a tear in our eye, in our raincoats and in our wellies.
They’ve started their life as husband and wife and as the song says “two became one”
So please raise your glass and join me, saying “good luck” to Clair and to John.
2nd October 2004.
