Making your christmas present

In the warm
of radiators and supper cooking
I cut tissue paper,
stick rainbow layers onto white:
my Christmas present for you.
I love the swish of scissors -
wish I could cut through grey distance,
make this present
in bright colours.
Glue drips onto the floor.
If I stand still too long
I'll never move again.
Do you want
what I have to give you?
Your eye is different to mine.
I can't bear these feelings,
slip out under the frosty sky
where air is exhausted
from homeward trips:
car sounds scar silence.
The ground's bone hard, drought dry.
In pencil scribble trees rooks squabble half asleep
before cold holds them for the night.
By spilt glitter lights
on rubbed out hills
I walk till I am numb.
