Without warning comes the day for which we wait all year
As from my sitting room with open door
I oversee my garden
The far end walled by trees
New clad in bright contrasting shades of green
The yellow green of ivy spills over
From a neighbour’s ground
While roses bloom in cream and red
Mocking the green of plants not yet in flower
My acer’s leaves glow redly
In the light of afternoon
Contrasting with a copper beech
Clad in more sombre tones
The blue-green leaves of eucalyptus
Interposed between them
While amongst the apple trees
I hear the hum of bees
And know at last that summer’s come.
