Abigail was rather surprised to see Jennifer Jane’s mum arrive at the Witches’ Home soon after breakfast. Mary explained that her daughter hadn’t come home the previous night.
“I’m not so worried about her, it’s become quite a habit, it’s Peter I’m worried about. He’s due home at midday tomorrow and goodness knows what his dad’ll say if he doesn’t come back for a week or two.”
Abigail took Mary through to the guardroom and looked up the last entry in the book.
“It says here she’s going exploring past the giant’s castle. Well there’s nothing up there except mountains and trees. I don’t suppose she’d stay over there very long, so goodness only knows where she’s got to by now.”
They went back into the courtyard and climbed up to the battlements. Abigail closed her eyes and turned slowly round and round with her arm outstretched.
“She’s gone again I’m afraid. I can’t get a reading of any sort, let’s go and get some help.”
As they walked back to the other side of the Witches’ Home one of the apprentices ran up.
“Please Abigail ma’am, there’s one of the Wish Warehouse fairies asking for you, or Jennifer Jane.”
Polly was waiting for them as they walked out onto the lawn. She was holding a spell box in one hand.
“I was asked to give this to Jennifer Jane urgently,” she said, “she used her broom breakdown spell yesterday and Lieutenant Moonshine doesn’t like leaving any one without a spare.”
“That’s why we can’t find her,” said Abigail, “she may have hurt herself when she crashed and can’t get back on her broom now it’s re-glittered. If she’s over the other side of those mountains I wouldn’t be able to locate her. We’ll get a couple of witches to come with us to help search the area. Thanks for letting us know Polly.”
Abigail smiled as Polly ran off towards the repair sheds.
“I suppose she’s going to see Robert,” said Mary.
“Nice kids, both of them,” said Abigail, “come on now let’s get this search organised.”
