Twenty Three

You died
there
On that corner
Crushed against the wheel
Your last breath
Pushed free from your ribs
They said there was no pain
she lay there beside you
Her hand in yours
Let go
As she went flying through the air
Glass raining in her hair
You had turned to her laughing face
No one saw the truck
Happens every day
No big deal it's okay
You lay there
Head against the wheel
And now she sleeps, drugged
with nurses by her bead
Scar across her forehead
will never heal
now
I keep the bathroom light on at night
and feel sick when I drive past
That corner
Where you turned
You felt twenty three wasn't so bad after all
Happy Birthday
And if I live
Till I'm a hundred and three
I will still remember you
And wish you hadn't loved her
You hadn't wanted to celebrate
your birthday
Just that much
