Now I Am One-And-Twenty
When I was barely nineteen,
My mother said to me,
“Spin only on your tippy-toes
And let those heels spin free.
The man should be the leader,
Just keep your head held high.”
But I would never heed her …,
I let her words go by.
When I outgrew my teen years,
She spoke to me again,
“Do not launch into the drops,
It makes the men complain.”
I’ve paid in bruises plenty
When crashing from a height;
But now I’m one-and-twenty,
I know the old girl’s right.
