Tomorrow

8 years is a long time!
It should have been 7, but they caught me with a smuggled mobile phone a couple of years ago;
made an example of me. Hmm... Typical!
I was 20 back then, and hated everyone for the way my life was unfolding.
Everyone was to blame! With one exception of course!
The guys said that they would visit me every week;
then the weeks became longer and longer...
Don’t see them at all now;
havn’t for about 5 years.
I wouldn’t squeal on them you see; that’s why I got the full sentence!
Thought I was being a hero; the big man!
I think that all they could see when they looked at me, was themselves; it must have got too much in the end...
The guilt!
The only people that stood by me were my family;
well, most of them; can’t blame my dad though;
I was always a disappointment!
I think he hoped that I would break the mould;
what a joke!
At least they let me go to the funeral!
I suppose I should be grateful for that.
Still, tomorrow’s my big day.
I’m a bit nervous to be honest.
My brother said he’d come and meet me, but
I said, “no.”
I just want to walk out of here alone, into a new life.
If anyone did come, it would be like a reminder;
a sort of link between 2 worlds.
Can’t wait to get back to work;
a friend of my mum said he may have something;
labouring I think.
It will be great to have a purpose again!
I hated work back then;
thought it was boring...
I had no idea!
Am I sorry for what I did?
I was sorry as soon as I was caught!
Sorry for me!
I genuinely thought it was his fault at first!
If he’d just let us get on with the burglary;
just sit there and behave!
But he had to try and be a hero didn’t he!
Now, after 8 years, I understand!
He WAS a hero!
