Up all night

God
I'm sure it was you
arguing with our star
just before its rise
end of the autumn
a cold snap setting in
you delayed the day
some say
I was waiting here
up all night
couldn't sleep
try as I might
and there you were
shadowing me from her
you said you were the one
the light
but while you revelled in your delight
I shivered barefoot on rough stone floors
log basket empty
next to draught riddled doors
my mind turned to yesterday
when you promised me the moon
as I stared into my cloudy beer
down at the old 'Wooden Spoon'
fire all lit
ebbing away too soon
you whispered to me that you were inside
and Newton and Darwin were just there for the ride
then you announced that you were everywhere
only a millimetre or so from my spiralling despair
so here now I pace, sentry for a sign
for the infant fingers of the morning shine
sky locked, hungry, duty bound
to dry my tears from the dewy ground
I believe that you will still come
hand in hand with the escaping sun
to kiss the world with new born lips
wriggling free from your partial eclipse.
