Crow

A big yellow moon hung over the cornfield.
A lazy scarecrow surveyed his domain and felt contented enough to
snooze.
"Look at Scarecrow," said Crow. "He's fallen asleep."
"Don't be too sure," said Possum. "He's played tricks on us
before."
"I'll make sure," said Crow. "When I give the signal, call the others.
We'll have a feast."
Possum sat himself on a tree trunk and waited.
Crow flew from his perch and landed on the ground a few feet from the
towering scarecrow.
"Watch your step, Crow," said Possum. "I think I saw his eyes
move."
"You're always seeing things," said Crow. "Now see if you can keep
quiet."
Possum closed one eye and grimaced. The other hungry creatures of the
forest sat in the cool grass and waited for Possums' call.
"Look!" said an unidentified rabbit. "Crow is now on Scarecrow's
shoulder! I can't bare to look!"
"Shhh!" said a journeyman groundhog. "You'll spoil everything."
Crow sat and listened intently to Scarecrow's snores until he was sure
they were genuine. He then signaled to Possum to summon the others to
the cornfield.
"Quickly!" said Possum. "The corn is ready and waiting! And no nibbling
till we're out of the cornfield!"
The following morning found farmer Jim bug eyed and beet red as he
searched in vein for his missing corn.
"Scarecrow!" screamed farmer Jim. "Where's my corn?"
Scarecrow pleaded innocent, but was convicted on five counts of grand
larceny. He is now doing one to two years at the State penitentiary;
where he spends his days avoiding his cellmate, Freddie "the Blow
Torch" Jones.
