The arm glided across the turntable and made a slow descent onto the little black disc. The needle worked its way into the groove, then let out a noisome crackle, followed by a joyful sound.
Whenever I'm with him
Something inside
Starts to burnin'
And I'm filled with desire
Julie left the jukebox behind and pulled Allison away from her circle of admirers.
“Let’s dance,” said Julie. “Those freshman only want you for your big tits.”
“What?” said Allison.
Face to face on the tiny space allotted for dancing at Junior’s soda shop, Julie and Allison flowed with the burning sounds of summer.
Could it be the devil in me
Or is this the way love's supposed to be
“Those boys," said Julie. “All they want is to cop a feel, then have a go at your zipper if you don’t object too much.”
“What’s with you today?”
“Buddy. That’s what’s with me. He’s an a-hole."
“What happened?"
“That dirty bitch Brenda. That's what."
“Ah, I’m sure it’s nothing. He’s just a flirt, is all.”
“Well, this time he flirted with all his body parts showing.”
“No way!” said Allison.
“Oh, yes, way,” said Julie.
Just like a heatwave
Burning in my heart
Can't keep from cryin'
It's tearing me apart
“Yesterday I was taking a short cut through the baseball field when I heard this noise coming from beneath the bleachers. I went over to take a look and got more than I bargained for.”
“Yes?”
“Please stop drooling, Allison. Or I won’t tell you anything anymore.”
“C’mon! What?”
“Brenda was shaking hands with his thingy. And he had a lip-lock on her boob.”
“No!”
“And that’s not all,” said Julie. “She slipped it under her skirt and fell on top of him. That’s when I ran home. It was disgusting.”
Sometimes I stare in space
Tears all over my face
I can't explain it, don't understand it
I ain't never felt like this before
“I don’t know why you’re getting so upset, Julie. It’s not like he’s your boyfriend.”
“But he’s supposed. . . to . . . be!”
But that doesn't mean it has me amazed
I don't know what to do, my head's in a haze
Just like a heatwave
Burning in my heart
Can't keep from cryin'
It's tearing me apart
“Oh, shit!” said Julie. “Don’t look! Don’t look! Don’t look!”
“Look at what?”
“Buddy. He’s over by the jukebox. Oh, my God! I think I’m gonna fucking die!”
“Oh, shit," said Allison. “And he’s coming over.”
”What‘ll I do! What‘ll I do!”
”Just tell him your not interested. Not after that business under the bleachers. That was horrible.”
“Do you mind if I cut in?" said Buddy.
“She doesn’t mind at all. Do you, Allison?"
“What? Me? No. I guess not."
“Hi, Buddy," said Julie. “Great song, huh?"
Don't pass up this chance
This time it's a true romance
