The Insect.
"What small creatures we are, what a small creature I am!" the insect said to himself,"what a small creature I am!"
The insect had just finished pulling his grisly, inky body up what seemed a gigantic mountain-but in pale reality, was just a small piece of gravel. The insect looked out beyond the gravel and gazed into the thick of the woods. The insect had always dreamed of venturing deep into it's vastness, and exploring all of it's curious."How long," shouted the insect,"must I remain so small? How long 'til I can be something, something of mention, something of praise?" The insect sat in silence, and realized no revelation would fancy his whimsy."Shall I go on eating?" the insect questioned himself. The insect has been dining on feces and other animals' wastes. He then realized what a grotesque diet he had taken upon himself. The insect had always heard stories of the great birds, those that dined on berries, and sweet fruits. How this meere thought delighted the insect! He continued to sit in silence. The insect was so tired of being so small that, hoestly,he didn't even feel like moving or thinking anymore."Maybe I'll just sit and whither away." thought the insect."Maybe I should not have emerged from the egg.Maybe I should not have allowed the pupa to grow.I am nothing;I'll do nothing." The insect, mounted upon the little pebble, did nothing. Then the insect re-thought his previous statement."A life of nothing is most wasted !But,I am ever small. What shall I do?" pondered the insect. As he sat, rubbing his compound eyes with his legs,he saw one of the Big Ones. The Big Ones were giants to say the least. It was rare for an insect to see one.An average insect sees three, maybe four in his life. The insect was inspired. Then,a certain voice inside the insect began to whisper. He felt it crawl through his thorax and up into his microscopic brain. It was the insects voice, but something he would never think. The insect longed to be one of the Big Ones. The thought of being a Big One to his insect families was so silly, that it was never said audibly. For,if the insect was to ever tell anyone this dream, they would certainly mock him.Insects are insects, that's all they are, that's all they'll be.But this consideration continued to course it's way through his pea-sized brain. He imagined having hands and feet, and fingers and toes.Having the ability of speech, instead of the annoying drone the insect utters. The insect felt euphroic for a moment, and then was sadly brought back to reality. The insect looked down, and saw what he was-an insect.A small, nasty creature, who vomits on his food and does his bidding in trash and waste. The insect remembered his surroundings, crawling through garbage and dead, decaying animals. The insect has spent his life writhing through waste and unwanted, for that's what the insect was, waste and unwanted. The insect moaned.
The Man
After such internal struggle, the insect began to feel weary. He had been making a long journey in search of water the entire day,and his tired legs were ready for rest. The insect relaxed his six legs and layed upon the pebble. He found it quite uncomfortable,so he decided to move down to the grass. The insect hoped not to impale himself on a single blade of grass,so he lowered himself down gently.Resting on the grass,he began to give into the sleep that was calling himself far from conscientiousness. And soon enough, the insect was asleep. It's hard to say how long the insect remained in his sleep, but that's not really important. At least, not as important what happened after his sleep. For,when the insect had awoken, queer events had taken place. For the insect was no longer an insect, but a man.The insect looked down at himself and realized what had taken place. The insect did not know how to react. He was a man! Imagine if you woke up toimorrow morning as a fish or a wolf, you probably wouldn't know what to do.The insect sat back in awe of himself. He realized his glory. What a mighty, glorious creature the insect had become! Life and everything felt oddly procurable now.The insect felt alive. He was finally something, but the insect didn't think of it quite that way,the insect believed he was everything. The insect truely was magnificent. He examined his new body.He had feet for walking, hands for grabbing, teeth for chewing(the insect was excited about that especially),a tongue for speaking, and fit lungs and a fit heart. He was glorious. Then, the insect remembered his family and the other insects he knew."What if they saw me now?" the insect was thinking to himself."They would be amazed! That's what would happen, they would see how small and filthy they are. They would see my glory and my light would surely outshine theirs. With one step,I could destroy an entire colony.Even with my voice,I could shake their foundation.Certainly, they would worship me." The insect was grinning. His new, human teeth were four times the size of his old body. The insect reflected on his previous state, but found it quite unpleasant,so he continued with his thinking. Then,it had finally come the time, the insect was to go explore the thick of the woods. What should he fear now,why should he remain in the outskirts?
The Woods.
The insect began venturing deeper and deeper into the woods. He wasn't afraid,in fact,he was thrilled. He ran across vast fields of green, climbed across falled trees, hopped through rivers and streams. After such merriment, the insect felt rather hungry. He walked through some shrub in search of raspberries. He always thought that raspberries looked espeically delicious. He sat down on a moss-covered rock and delighted himself to the taste of the freshly picked raspberries.Flavors bursted through his mouth like multiple explosions. It was invigorating. The insect finished his meal of jolly and rested upon the rock and stared into the sky.The insect began reflecting on his previous eating habbits. He remembered eating feces and other animals' wastes. He was utterly discusted at his previous self. How could he return to eating like that should he return to normal? Becoming anorexic or builimic might be the only solution. The insect intended on stuffing himself plump with his new diet and the new food he had found in the thick of the woods. The insect decided to venture deeper. He wandered through, still with no fear of what was to come. How naive the insect was, however!
The Creature
The insect was venturing deeper and deeper into the woods. He had begun walking through thorns and thicket and found it most dreadful.Cuts and scratches began to adorn his mighty, fortified legs. The insect began wondering if the Big Ones had problems too.Sadness and depresion seemed to only be evident in the smallest of life forms. The insect was now expierencing pain and sorrow again. His glory seemed to be depleting. Then he looked down at himself for a second time and was reminded of his greatness. The insect remembered the granduer his new human body had brought him.The insect was once an insect, but now he was the most powerful thing to ever walk through this world. His majesty gave the insect reason to exist. The insect stood there,in awe of his majesty, and drew the conclusion that he was some sort of god.It was hard to admit at first, but soon the insect began shouting it at the top of his lungs. He realized his importance.Such enlightenment tickled his insides. The insects life for himself now,for his own profit, his own value.Nothing could harm him, nothing could hurt him, nothing could stop him.The insect was now such a glorious creature, and everything revolved around him.He began to jump about and sing,he sang of his own beauty and gorgeousness. But little did he know, the singing would lead to his demise. For,with in close distances, lurked a great creature. The creature was large and powerful, vigilant and storng. With one squeeze,he break the bones of the back of a man.His power was much more the a man's.The insect continued in his little tune, when he heard a loud roar,His loud exclaims had awaken the beast. It snarled as it advanced near the insect. The insect's new body was certainly strong, but it could nowhere near match the creature's.The beast shined it's teeth and they gleasened in the sunlight. The insect moved back for a second, but then remembered who he was.No fear.He lunged himself onto the beast with great confidence in himself. The beast was meerely disctrated by the insect's great charge. The insect thought that he would be a great man of battle, like a general of war.Soon he was taught different,as the creature took a large chunk of of his side with one of it's razor-sharp claws. The blood spilled out profusely. The insect collpased and the creature scurried away. His greatness seemed oddly reduced. The insect believed he was capable of anything. He believed he had reached the top,he believed he was a god."How long 'til I reach the top?" shouted the insect."How long 'til I am everything, and those grotesque beasts called 'others' bow at my feet? I had it all.I could do anything I wanted,go anywhere I wanted.Where is it now? Does this life have any meaning, does anything matter? Do I matter?" The insect was still. It felt like a fire was burning inside of his belly. The insect remained still and began questioning everything he had previously thought. Not but ten minutes ago,the insect believed he was the only thing that mattered. Now,he's quesioning if he matters at all.His intensity began to collapse with him.His greatness reduced to nothing. All the pride and confidence were gone. The insect used to think life was all about him,now he wasn't sure.He thought that he was something of mention, something of praise,he thought he deserved nations to bow down before him,be believe he deserved whatever he desired-but what now?
The Insect II
The insect fell into another deep sleep. He was peaceful and still. When he awoke,he found himself as an insect again.A tiny bug, with a tiny brain, tiny wings, tiny legs, and a tiny body. All of the glory he found in himself was now gone.It was a distant memory, offering hope and delivering sadness. The insect contemplated all of the days events. He laughed at the diversity of emotions he had expierenced in no less than 24 hours. The insect sat in silence and thought. He thought of his smallness, how he was nobody, nothing of mention nor praise. He had no glory,no greatness,no majesty,no rulership, couldn't decide what happened and what didn't happen. He was just a tiny little bug that no one needed.Yes,the insect was just a pest, and agent of annoyance. The insect trembled in awe of what a mighty thing could have created this world. He thought of the attention to detail it took to design even the smallest of organisms as himself. From man to mammals, birds, aquatic life, the bugs and insects, the paramecium and amoebas, slime molds and other fungi, bacterium and the smallest of bascilli and spirillum,single-celled organisms whose genetic make-up was event too small for an insect to see.The insect was in awe."What small creatures we are, what a small creature I am!" the insect said to himself,"what a small creature I am!"
