"Kayla, can you help me dear?" asked a small voice which lingered from the old grey barn into Kayla's ear.No matter how much she wanted to,the voice could not be shut out;the usual punishment would be in effect as well.Kayla had been living on the farm with her family all her life. The farm itself was beautiful. It was filled with rich, luscious colors. The grassy slopes and flavorsome trees aligned the eye-popping hillsides. What a lovely place to live, right?Normally yes. However,Kayla's family and neighbors were nothing but corrpulent beasts. Her father worked her non-stop.He made her rise at 4:40.She was given little,if any,to eat every morning. While the rest of her sibbling were indulging in thick, hardy pancakes, bacon, and french toast,Kayla was given a small cup of pop corn or even sunflower seeds. After "breakfast" she had to go out to the barn where they kept their cows and milk every last creature.Stall by stall, slowly rubbing each of her course digits to the bone. After tending to such wretched creatures, she went to the coup to inspect each of the chicken's eggs.Making sure they were the right color, right weight, right everything. If not fit to her family's likings, she had to discard the by cracking them and watching the lifeless chick's body fall quick to the dirt. Then it was to plowing the crops. Her most hated task of all.Day after day, after day, after day,the same chores. If she ever spoke up or finished a chore incorrectly, her father would punish her in ways that are nearly to harsh to bear.Sometimes he would take her out to the outhouse and wrap a belt around her neck near to the point of choking.Along with nearly suffocating her to death,he would put her feet in buckets of ice water to insure the pain was the kind you can't suffer without screaming.
Kayla heard her father asking for help."Dear he calls me.As if he has any reason to give me a pet name." she whispers to herself."Kayla, get over here or else I will break your arm!" cries the voice with much more anger then the first time.Kayla swallows all the grieve and and despair that burns in her heart to go help her father accomplish whatever cruel task he has for her.She walks over to the barn to find her father with a plank of wood."Dad,what are we doing?" she asks."Well,sweetie.Just close your eyes and you'll find out." So she did.She knew what was going to happen.WHAAM!.She was right. Her father had lunged the plank of wood right into her face. She was now bleeding."Thanks honey, that's all I wanted." her father says with a large grin.
Not only was she abused by being made to work so much, she was also abused physicall by her father and brothers and sexually by her neighbor Clide.Clide moved into the house next to their barn three years ago.He had been doing unspeakable acts to her since she was a very small girl. She was 11 now and she was 9 then. She never said a word. Not about her father and brothers and not about Clide. She just bottled up all the pain and agony. The pain turned into anger, and the anger into hate. After being smitten to the ground by her father, she ran to her room crying. That's when she thought of it,she decided to run away."They won't even miss. They'll probably have a good riddance party.Maybe some other family will adopt me.Even if they don't it's better than being here. But when?why not now? What's stopping me?"She leaped from her bed, grabbed a cross necklace her mother made her before she passed, and went out the door. She walked through her house thinking "This is the last time I'll see all this." She wasn't thinking in a sad way,but as in celebration. She cracked open the front door and was trampling over the stepping stones to the entrance."Where ya goin'?" asked one of her brothers who was outside playing with a friend."To get some air." She had no trouble lying to him,it was one of her younger brothers. One of the older boys would be a bit harder to pass by with the old "getting air" lie.She unhinged the gate and was on her way.Nothing to stop her now.
She ran off to the side where there was a small patch of woods. She ran swift through the trails that deer and other animals made. She wasn't sure if she would find anyone. She always heard talk of there being some cabins in the woods, but she wasn't sure if it were true. She carried on though.Crossing small streams and leaping logs every 10 feet. She was in the woods for at least an hour when night began to fall. She had to keep running though, she had to find what her heart was set out to find -a real family. It was growing dark and vision was beginning to fade. Her effortless running soon came to a halt. While runnings through some buches, she scratched her arms and legs on some thorns. She fell to the mossy ground and began shouting. She was yelling at God."Why did you do this to me?Why did you give me this family? Why?" She was screaming so loud, she almost didn't hear a woman saying "It isn't God you're mad at,it's yourself." Kayla calmed her tears as much as she could and said "How could I be mad at myself?" "Because, you're mad that you can't do anything about it.You wish you could tell them to cut out,but they won't." "Well, let's say I am mad at myself, what business do you have telling me who I am mad at?" The woman walked a bit closer and said "It's my business 'cause I want to help you."
The woman reached out her hand to Kayla and lifted her off the ground."Maybe you could adopt me!Maybe you can let me live with you" Kayla said with a large grin on her face."Oh I'm sorry dear,I can't.I already have a large family as it is.But I would like you for company tonight." "Never mind." Kayla says, closing her large brown eyes to hold the tears back."No,I want you to come with me.Besides those cuts of yours need cleaning up." "I suppose you're right.Alright,I'll go with you." "Glad you said that. Now,lets get going." The woman says reaching out her hand for Kayla's.Kayla grabs on and the both run off. They run off gigling and laughing. It is the first time Kayla had laughed for about three months.
The woman took Kayla to a small cabin crafted from wood."It's lovely." Kayla says with a glare in her eye."I'm glad you like it.Now,would you like some hot chocolate?" "I very much would." They walked into the quaint little cabin and Kayla could hardly believe what she was seeing. The inside was much larger then the outside made it look.It was filled with small trinkets and memorabillia to old movies like "King Kong" and "Casa Blanca".The interior was compossed of rich woods and dark red carpets. The atmosphere was warm from the fireplace and candles that were found in the living room. The woman put a pot on the back burner of the stove in her kitchen and her and Kayla started to conversate."So,I forgot to ask your name." Kayla says."Oh,everyone just calls me Kay." "That's funny,my name is Kayla." "That is funny." They shook hands to make their greeting more proper. The pot began to whistle and before she knew it,Kayla had a large mug filled with hot chocolate to the brim. They were talking for 15 minutes when the woman removed her coat. She was wearing a striped sweater and a cross neckalce. They were then talking about where Kayla went to school when Kayla realized, the cross necklace was the same kind that Kayla had.Her mother made it special for her though. She asked "Where did you get that necklace?" Kay just stared for a bit and said "Well,my mother gave it to me.I need to show you something." She lifted up her sleeves to reveal a second sleeve of scars.Every scar that was on her was either one that Kayla had or where she had sctratches from the thorns."This is weird I got to go I gotta..." Kay put her hand of her waist to guide her back down to the chair."Look,I know it's strange, but your agony was so strong, that not even a time-line would keep comfort away." "So what does this mean? You are me?" "Actually yes,you see I remeber running away.It was even lonelier. There was absolutely no one.I was missing for a week.I only remeber being gone three days.I fell into a creek and banged my head.I woke up at the hospital. My family was all gathered around me.It was strange,it was the first time I saw them as family." "So what should I do then?" "Go home, get back to your family. They are cruel and it seems like they hate you. But,it is better to be filled with agony with others around, then it is to be filled with agony alone."
Kay pointed to the door and Kayla knew it was time to go.She walked out and raced through the trails again.Racing over rocks and dirt, and stumps and logs. She kind of knew things would be better. If not,why would Kay make her leave? She finally came to the exit of the woods to see her little Georgian farm. She saw Clide pulling out of his house in a moving truck.Clide was forced to live somewhere else because he tried to do what he did to Kayla to another little girl. That girls mother caught him,so he was evicted out for those and other reasons. When Kayla walked her father was sitting on the couch with a phone in his hand.He was on the phone with the cops saying "She's about 4 feet 9 inches. She has been missing since..." He saw her and hung up the phone. He swooped her up in his arms and said "Honey, you had me scared half to death." There it was, compassion in his voice.Something she hadn't heard since her mother died. That is why he realized his care for her. When Kayla's mother died, her father just sat in his room for 5 days in a row. When he came out,he was nothing but a bitter old man.The incident revived the love that was burried deep within him.Since then,he hasn't made her do so much work, has been making her better breakfastes, and he also stopped abusing her.Odd,isn't it.Sometimes the greatest agony and despair can diminish into nothing. All you have to do is have a good talk with yourself.
