Remember

Remember me when the twilight of your past lingers like amber leaf smoke swirling swirls,
Around your mid-night nocturnal thoughts;
Intoxicating your mind with thoughts of yet another busy day.
Remember me when you look at yourself whilst preparing your hair
And cleansing your face of make-up of a day filled
With lectures coffee and children, those whom you fostered and those of your own.
Remember me when your head hits the pillow and your sanctuary door is closed
The world outside, no fears within, all is calm, peace and at rest,
And heaven is heavy on your mind and your dressing gown is draped over your vanity chair.
Remember me as you pray and ask the Father to remind you, your sorrows only last
For a moment in this passage of time, and remind you that those who purserver like you
Will always have enough for your family’s needs even though chaos looms
And discouragement sometimes plagues your resolute mind.
Remember me as you sleep and dream dreams of that villa in France, looking out of your office window
Onto the wide expanse of a sea of green, with clouds drifting thick over the Pyrenees;
As you write your dissertation on God in the present tense as opposed to back then,
And muse over the bleak winters of England’s inglorious decline.
Remember me when you wake and your girls via for your attention, as you
Sit at your breakfast table and enjoy the fruits of your labour,
And smile to yourself, how worthy it was to take time out of your busy schedule, last night
To French plat their hair, just for it to be undone again
So their locks could wave like the waves of the sea in the glorious south
Remember me when you are driving your car to work and sing to
The songs of the good old days on radio 2
And adolescent meaningless of yesteryear.
And when you step into your classroom to teach war poetry
And those enthusiastic students look back at you,
Remember this is where you first found me and transformed me into something totally brand new
And made me realise that I could be something more than I thought I could ever be
And created in me the vision to see beauty in all that I do
