In the beginning the Owl was just like all of the other birds. It flew about and hunted by day and slept until deep into the night. It hunted for mice all day long which was its favorite meal of all. The days were long and the sunshine underneath the trees was warm and bright. The summer followed the winter season after season and always the great owl flew by day in splendor and wonder all over the meadows and fields. It cry was heard over the wide country often as it flew and hunted for its food and fare still. So it went for the longest of time with the owl being wide awake in the sunshine like all of his kind, and he slept tightly like all other birds in the darkness of the night. But one night, as he was sleeping fast in the old oak tree that was his home, he heard with his very sharp ears as he slept a tiny mouse scurrying about in the tall grass in search of something to forage and eat himself. Mice were his favorite so his eyes sprung wide awake in an instant. As he listened to the little fellow down below, he soon looked up to the bright full moon above. How beautiful it was indeed and he had never spied another wonder like it. He was filled with wonder and admiration in his heart for the greatest sight that he had ever seen. The bright shining full moon above displays its marvelous bright rays to light up all of the dark night skies. Around it, in equal wonder and magnificence, the myriad of stars shone brightly as well. The shining crown jewels of the great Queen moon herself. The Owl fell in love with her beauty and enchantment right away, and from that time onward he would always be awake in the middle of the dark night to keep his mistress the moon company with the warmth of love and wonder in his soul. She was the greatest lover of all things and she would never be alone again. The wise old owl would keep her company always, as he hunted and fed, never sleeping and never resting an eyelid just his great Majesty above. And that is the story of how the ancient owl fell in love with the moon and the stars of midnight. Wisdom and love and wonder was forever his to hold in his heart in the darkness of the midnight hours.
