I once had a girl
With hair that matched her hazel eyes
And we would lie
Away from sight
Underneath the russet evening sky.
She had a scent of her own,
Unmistakable,
That mixed with the smell of the clover
And the daisy
And the smoky, end-of day-air.
She would smile as I played with her hair
And I would laugh
As she touched me
There,
Her hand roving and moving over me.
Her laugh would reach the tops of the trees
As we rolled
And clung together
And her legs with mud-stained knees
Would slowly wrap around me.
We would make love as dusk approached,
Crushing grass and clover and daisy
And her body on mine, her hair,
Her scent and the air,
Would make my head feel quite hazy.
