May 8, 1920

Dear Mums and Daddy,

This is a picture of our music room. We are all enjoying the voyage, but will soon be in Quebec. Bammie and Peter are coping well, thank goodness. Peter can't wait to see his parents again.

We made good friends on the boat, Mr and Mrs Haliday with their baby, and Mr and Mrs. Baumborough. Mark doesn't feature in many pictures because he spent most of his time reading his book. He is reading Septimus by WJ Locke. We will soon be on dry ground again, and need to get to the Canadian Pacific Train Station for our cross county trip which starts on the 10th. It will take four  days to get to Vancouver.

I know he read it bedcause Gwenllian has left a packet of photos from the trip and written on the backs of them. The photos are not very good quality, and the picture of Mark reading on the deck isn't worth showing.

We're not supposed to know who Bammie and Peter are yet, are we? Never heard of that book or its author, but it made me look it up! Rhiannon

My husband always referred to her as Bammie - so I decided to, although I called her Mother Day when I wrote the Burma book. On the back of the photos she is called Mums, but I know that Mark called her that, so he might have written the comments. Gwenllian called her mother Mums, so she can't call Caroline that too in my book  or it would be too confusing.  I presume Bammie was some little child's attempt at saying Granny. Peter was not the eldest grandchild, but his older cousins would not have lived in Worcester near Bammie as he did so he might have made up the name.

Apparently this period of time just after the war was a depression, and everyone was having a bad time of it. Mark was a minng engineer by trade, as his brother Harold was, and Harold also ended up in small time farming. I think Dick (whose real name is Francis or Frank Richmond, but everyone in the family called him Dick) was also an engineer of some sort. Una trained as a teacher, but I don't think Gwenllian worked before her marriage. Una and Dick married in 1915, and Mark and Gwenllian in 1917. I have both their wedding pictures, which I will try to post at some stage.

Hi Jean,

I think the photos are brilliant and give an insight into how the furniture looked. What an amazing music room, it looks very relaxing too with plenty of room space. Fascinating to think the people of this time cared so much about architecture, far more than they do today.

I always admired the Victorians for their visions and buildings that stood the test of time.

Sorry I've gone a bit away from your letters, only the photo just got me thinking.

It was so lucky to find out the name of their ship, and then have it be one that had pictures of it available. I wonder if they all went first class (I've put them down as second) because in a later letter Mark talks about his mother going home and says, "At least we know she was as comfortable as you could be."
