Soul Mate

Mischievous little rays of sunshine danced on the window sill, carefully checked nobody was watching, and then playfully sashayed their way under the sleepy curtains, along the quilt and tried with all their might to lift her eyelids. It worked too!
I blearily opened one eye, quickly realising the orangey blanket cloaking the room meant morning had arrived. Again. For as many years as I can remember I’ve always hated waking up alone. Even when I was just a little kid I used to daydream about being able to wake with a friend next to me. And then, as the years progressed, I was fortunate enough for somebody to like me enough to share the night with me. I could experience that dream of mine of the wonder and warmth of waking in company.
“Bloody hell”, was a thought that often crossed my mind in moments such as todays. How could the reality of such an intimate moment be such an anticlimax after so many years of expectancy? Why won’t they share that moment togetherness with me in the way that I’ve always dreamed?
Maybe the orangey glow is the trail left by a quickly exiting Angel, one that came to visit me secretly in the night, one that grants a wish for you if you wish hard enough and for long enough. I’m not entirely sure why I’d have been singled out for such divine intervention.
My other eye sneaked open without telling me and let itself settle on the beautiful person next to me. A sharp elbow woke the other eye from its morning daze and prompted it to join its partner in contented gaze. I reached out and touched her gently, just to check she was real. She smiled a sleepy smile, rolled a little closer and drew me to her warm body. I could hear her breathing quicken and I knew she was still fast asleep, but she still wanted to share herself with me.
How many souls wander the World? Millions? Trillions? It must be at least that many. They never die, they never sleep, they just want to be loved and love back again. Not just any love, true love. Unfortunately it seems too many souls conflict with one another and when one finds that rare shining diamond it has to hold on with all its worth. And when your soul is released back into the ether, it will never rest until it’s reunited with its true companion.
Had we met in another life? Had our souls met before? This morning it feels like that to me and I can finally feel that dream of mine for real.
