out of the loop

out of the loop
there was a time
when our homesteads
quietly gently soothed,
as they curved around us
we made circles for the flame
hearth huddled and close bound
we were arm to arm,
each with shoulders to lean against
we talked and ate together
grew together
our houses in the round,
keeping us face to face
we slept around our wheeled wall
with no need for corners
our ringed dreams,
unencumbered and fire lit
now we have needless neatness
corners and doors keep us detached
as we endure faceless boxes,
long before we withdraw in one

Such an evocative poem, that
Such an evocative poem, that recreates that age of simplicity - a wagon train, a nomadic camp, wherever our ancestors dwelt in close company, as you say 'in the round'; which contrasts with our modern angular life of isolation. And I though the last two lines were a zinger!
