“Two please, darling, and make Luther’s very sweet. Is there any chance of having my chair back?” David’s question was greeted with an icy stare. “Okay, I’ll sit here.” He looked down to the whisky bottle and noticed it had hardly been touched. “Did you not fancy a drink then?”
“No, I have other things on my mind, things of great importance.”
“Like what?”
“Things like how to get myself out of a situation I don’t want to be in.”
“What do you mean? You’re not going to leave us are you? We need you here. ”
“We? What do you mean by ‘we’?”
“Me and the brotherhood will assist you with anything, so it might benefit you to stick around.”
“Oh yes, your benefit or mine?”
“Yours of course. Anyway, what situation do you need to get yourself out of?”
“It’s beyond your comprehension, little man. Besides, it’s something only I can do. Not something that you or your brotherhood can help me with. I’ll skip the tea. I’m tired so I’ll go and have a lie down. When I wake up I’ll decide where I have to go and what must be done.”
“Okay Luther.” Lucifer got up and headed upstairs. Moments later, Ruth walked into the room. “Here’s your tea. Oh, where’s Luther gone?”
“He decided he was tired. He has the weight of the world on his shoulders. I only hope he decides to share that burden. Excuse me darling, I just have to make a quick phone call.”
“To who?”
“Jeremiah, he’ll know what to do.”
“About what?”
“Keeping Luther here of course. What’s with all the questions?”
“Nothing dear, I’ll drink the tea on my own then, shall I?” David had already left the room and made his way to the hall where he picked up the phone.
“Hello Jeremiah, it’s David. I thought I’d better phone you to let you know that Luther is thinking about moving on.”
“What! That mustn’t happen. It’s imperative he stays with us no matter what.”
“I know Jeremiah, but I can’t physically lock him up in the house can I?”
“No, you can’t. I think the best thing to do is when he wakes up, tell him the brotherhood has something to tell him about himself. If he wants to know the truth he has to stay with you until we can arrange a meeting, is that okay?”
“Yes Jeremiah, I only hope he listens.”
“So do I. I’ll pray he makes the right decision. Goodbye, David.”
“Goodbye, Jeremiah. God bless.” David slowly and quietly put the phone receiver down and returned to the living room. “Is my tea poured, Ruth?”
“Yes it is poured, your royal highness. Come and relax, you’ve been on your feet all day.”
The hours had passed and Mary was still by John’s bedside, stroking his hand and gazing at the monitors which were constantly bleeping. She looked at the clock, it was a little after nine. The hospital corridors were finally quiet from the feet and voices of busy doctors and nurses. She released John’s hand to stand from her chair and stretch. Slowly, she walked towards the window where she rested her head on the glass and looked out towards the heavens. The stars were shining bright and the moon was resting in its black blanket of sky.
