Roads by Night

Roads by night, stars clustered in nests
guide my dusty footprints home.
I long to be there now, my head's a mess.
The moon glints through branches of distressed
birch that tower over, shadowed domes
covering roads by night. Stars clustered in nests
cast a darting glow through the night sky obsessed
by illuminating truth. I'm left here alone
but I just can't be here. My head's a mess.
Nerve endings prickle a warning, the fear night suggests.
Quickened gulps of air shooting down to atone
as I run roads by night, stars clustered in nests
highlight my skin touched by panic's caress.
Pulsating blood travelling from artery to bone
and I long not to be here. My head's a mess.
Elucidate the scene, a tangle of forest
that hides the primal entity living to hunt and roam
roads by night. Stars clustered in nests
glint above me as I lay. My head's a mess.
