Living Space

Style gardening is all the rage, my dear
A pastime so intense,
There's barely any time left
To peep through white picket fence.
Staying ahead of florid fashion
Or the Chelsea Flower Show,
One really has to extend the range
Of all that one might grow.
Structure is the key we're told;
Find a natural theme,
Raising stakes in neighbourhood envy
While keeping fingers green;
I've opted for a classic look,
One that may be found
In wildlife settings, anywhere,
Common or garden ground:
Take three tons of quick set concrete,
At least two burned out cars,
A shopping trolley, broken fridge,
Bent bicycle handle-bars.
Finer detail, now pay attention,
For the connoisseur of taste;
A light top dressing of used syringes
And chemical toxic waste.
Now, carefully assemble
All elements of art,
Don't fret too much if you cannot guess
Where on Earth to start;
Just leave it there, au-natural,
It will rearrange itself:
A praise of post-modern outdoor living
In crude industrial wealth.
