Ironing, a woman's half hour
By littleditty
- 2409 reads
Space/Time has glass edges
and creases made not hewn
by the wash folding,
folding and extending,
extending back the wave
of all longing
orbiting at a waterfall’s edge,
cliff cave and curtains
when she lets
the light
come in....Attention
will wander away
from the last frame as I wonder,
I wonder when remembering
and forgetting waltzes
ebb and flow, no chorus
singing hallelujah, just
impatient wasps, a big
point to make, staring
at the end of someone else's
queue, waltzers, no towers
to fall in cartoon slow mo,
singing 'Wasp' instead
of Take this Waltz, this Waltz
always, when a spin cycle
does not take forever
always is another detonator
detonating and the tumbling
and tumbling by the window,
ironing, like all statues tumbling,
tumbling into a ditch or river - this is
for the top drawer, the shattered glass,
a woman’s half hour folding
and folding and folding.

The repetition in this is so
The repetition in this is so effective. And a waltz, ironing, is perfect. Mind you, I deliberately buy things that don't really need ironing or look slightly creased. I would only iron for a special occasion these days which thankfully most days are not. I like the wandering thoughtfulness of this, the statues, glass ceilings, and worlds tumbling whilst ironing. Maybe if you have thoughts this deep whilst ironing I should take it up again. Very good.

when you're doing something,
when you're doing something, you're doing something else. you're being someone (else).

As I iron so
As I iron so rarely it is very stressful and concentrated so not sure if your poem is an accurate reflection on normal ironing. However it is BRILLIANT description of washing machine noise, I love how it goes round and round like my thoughts and like different clothes appear over and over at different angles, so do my thoughts, never whole or sensible, just tumbling sleeves or flashes of button. Enjoyed very much

Brings back those awful days
Brings back those awful days when I used to iron - the time we waste doing things we don't want to do for no good reason. :)
