After the Rain

I can recall many pluvial days
but none as torrential as the one
we had in the last month or so.
The sky always ominously dark
developed into a cloudburst.
Not just raining cats and dogs
but also the entire menagerie
of the animals from Noah's Ark.

We went through a bad patch
and didn't know if we could cope.
The rainbow - the spectral arc
that appeared with the rain -
may have been an illusory hope
but it proved to be a good omen
as at last the deluge stopped
and we breathed a sigh of relief.

Now the children can play outdoor
and enjoy the resurgent sunshine
without the incessant downpour.
The grown-ups will be able to pick
a dry spot on the grass where to lay
a blanket for the perfect picnic
hoping the weather will stay fine
and that the respite won't be brief.
