Aftermath

Nearly a week has gone by
since the nation cried
for those who died
at the Manchester Arena
when, after the end
of a beautiful concert,
a murderous pervert
struck a deadly blow.
It is not so long since
that despicable act
made such an impact
on people’s awareness.
In the bleak aftermath
we’ve shed many a tear
but vowed that fear
would not defeat us.
Respect for the victims
with a minute of silence
and rejection of violence
is the Mancunian way.
The community stands
against any creed
intended to breed
disharmony and hate.
In the wake of the atrocity,
we know we can cope
and with renewed hope
we shall conquer evil.
The ancient aphorism
‘goodwill to all men’
is as valid now as it was then
so let us live in peace.
