As he delivered the funeral oration with great dignity, the Senator realised that the sympathy vote being generated would swing the result of the forthcoming election in his favour. It had been touch and go until now.
Whilst praising his late wife, the unfortunate victim of a hit-and-run, the memory of her infidelity was still an open wound, especially as the correspondent in the adultery had been his political opponent.
Anyone listening to the grieving widower’s eulogy would not have recognised the man who, earlier in the week, had uttered the fateful words: ‘How much, to murder the treacherous bitch?’

Nicely done - however
Nicely done -
however shortening the sentences would make the pace more vivid.
and the last sentence even more dramatic.
hope you don't mind this, I did enjoy reading it.

Great piece, Luigi! It reminds me of Hickey's speech in Eugene O'Neill's play "The Iceman Cometh" - don't know if you've seen/ read it? Well done on the cherry!

Admirable stuff, Luigi - much enjoyed and caused me to laugh a little at the end, which felt highly inappropriate but I just couldn't help myself (probably says more about me than it does about your writing, but nonetheless...)
Hope you are well, sorry to hear this didn't win in the competition, but how gracious of you to congratulate the winner - a true gent :)
