A Certain Dream

My head hits the pillow
and I fall into a sleep
so deep that is rare
for me to remember
any meaningful dream
or nightmare.
 
Except for once
when a certain dream
is so vivid and clear
that I can recall
its subtle nuance.
 
In this dream
I am just a bystander;
an impartial observer,
it would seem.
 
I am not allowed
to venture an opinion
in case it disrupts
the harmony
of a perfect world,
 
where everybody smiles
at one another
and universal love
reigns supreme.
 
Where even your old foe
forgets his hate
and calls you brother,
in this idyllic state.
 
In this dream.

Hi Luigi,

so often in dreams we are the observers, like watching ourselves in a film. We know we're taking part but have no control of what's going on, we just have go with the flow so to speak. I always think it's like an out of body experience.

Your poem summed up nicely those feelings of not being able to disrupt the flow.

I recognise the feeling of disembodiment that you aptly describe. As you rightly say, it is like watching ourselves in a film but as an audience rather than participants.

I have a feeling of time travel in this, because you describe yourself as the outsider. The last few lines seem especially moving at the moment.

Yes, Catherine, dreams are very much like time travel insofar as we are not conscious of where we are and how we fit in that abstract environment.
The last few lines define a sense of disappointment at the realisation that our wishes of peace and brotherhood are, unfortunately, not likely to be fulfilled and they are just pie in the sky.
