Dear Cleo, I know
that it would be better
to express my feelings
for you in a letter
but I haven't that choice.
Yet I rejoice
that I was by your side
when you, heartbroken,
contemplated suicide.
How unhappy
you must have been
on that fateful night
as you heard that your lover
and steadfast knight
was no longer around
to protect his queen.
You thought it best
to grasp this asp
and let my lips kiss
your delicate breast.
It was nice at the end
that you chose me to be
your bosom friend.

Luigi, did you mean that line to be must have you been rather than 'you must have been'? Rhiannon

Hello Rhiannon, how nice to hear from you.
Regarding that line, I could say that it was 'poetic licence' as defined by the Cambridge English Dictionary - the act by a writer or poet of changing facts or rules to make a story or poem more interesting or effective - but I have to admit that it was more a case of casualness as I muddled the sentence during various edits of the poem. Thanks for pointing out the anomaly.
