Hot Head

It isn’t the temperature
that goes to her head,
it is just her temper
that needs cooling down.

She is a pacifist
who abhors all wars
and joins many marches
all over the town.

If someone opposes
her point of view
she avoids arguments
but uses her fists.

Was told many times
a slugfest is improper
as it gives a bad name
to all the activists.

She is a good girl
who listens and learns
and accepts our counsel
albeit with a frown.

Yet I know that next time
her resolve will weaken
and once again
she’ll need cooling down.

She sounds like a girl with the right kind of fire, just in need of tempering. Reminds me of Scout in Mockingbird or Eustacia Vye in Return of the Native. Tenderly written.

There are many examples of determined young women like the ones you mention, Alex, and also throughout history. One that comes to mind is 'La Pasionaria' who was very prominent during the Spanish Civil War.
I wrote this poem with a touch of humour as I didn't want to portray her as a termagant.

Surely these stubborn people can see the logic of our point of view? We must knock sense into their heads. I can hear her say.
Paradoxically this kind of attitude is present in many confrontations that start with the best intentions and end in fisticuffs Glad you liked the humour with which the point was made, Bee.

I liked the play on temperature/temper at the beginning, Luigi. And also the abhorrence of wars except her own. Also, as Bee says, the avoidance of arguments by using her fists. Rhiannon

The situation I described, Rhiannon, is obviously a contradiction in terms. Some people, while advocating a peaceful resolution, are so entrenched in their beliefs that they think it's quite in order to impose them on others forcefully. The paradox is that the verbal arguments they avoid then become physical.
The high temperatures that we've had recently and our need for cooling down gave me the idea to introduce the word temper into the equation.
