The dog's name is Ellie
and the boy's is James.
She dreams of a bone,
he about new games.

Though you may think
that the dog is his pet,
you would be mistaken:
they have just met.

He'd like to own her
but sadly he can't
as the lovely animal
belongs to his aunt.

For the enchanted kid
it is like a godsend
to sit side by side
with man's best friend.

The pair are admiring
the sunset's beauty.
young James with Ellie
on sentinel duty.

Hi Jenny. This scene of my grandson with the golden retriever was captured by my daughter during our recent holiday in Como. The two became friends right away.

A lovely poem Luigi.

So I read it twice.

One verse I read three times because where I come from the words 'can't' and 'aunt' don't rhyme.

Many thanks, Terence for your feedback. I'd be surprised if 'can't' and 'aunt' rhymed in Bulgaria or am I thinking of the wrong location? laugh

Well, you're not wrong Luigi. In Bulgarian, aunt is lelya (леля) and can't is ne moga (не мога).

But I grew up in Ireland and the north of England where aunt rhymes with ant. In fact they're both pronounced exactly the same.

Aren't rhymes with can't though, if that's any help.

You may well be right but songwriters such as Bob Dylan have rhymed those two words without any qualms.

Example from "SUGAR BABY" by Bob Dylan:

I'm staying with Aunt Sally, but you know, she's not really my aunt
Some of these memories you can learn to live with and some of them you can't

How wonderful that he was able to have some time with a dog - and such a shame that he isn't able to live with one himself. It was a lot of work and responsibility, but I'm so glad my sons grew up with animals - they're far better people for it

"Man's best friend" I've read up on it, as world wide the most popular breed is a Labrador, we've had them. Lovely, beautiful gentle temperament, very inteligent. But I want a Rhodesian Ridgeback, the african "lion dog".
