No Laughing Matter

I joke and jest
and do my best
to raise a smile
once in a while.

Then read the news,
think 'what's the use
trying to amuse?
It will only bemuse'.

I'm wrong to assume
there's no room
for doom and gloom.
I swear and fume.

It's a slippery slope,
there is little hope
and not much scope
to protect the globe.

Difficult to predict
if the besieged can evict 
the foes and contradict
doubts that they are invict.
