My name is Christopher
but you can call me Chris.
The reason why my plan
to reach the East Indies
went slightly awry is this.
When I plotted the course
of west by north-west
I thought it would take us
to the land of our quest.
My instinct was strong:
if the earth was a sphere
we could not go wrong:
it was abundantly clear
that Cathay was reachable
from either direction.
It looked at first sight
that my chosen selection
had proved to be right
but on further inspection
I saw that my theory was duff
as the native population
didn't look oriental enough.
