Earth to earth.
Stone upon stone.
Weeping eyes
amid the weeping willows.
A multitude
surrounds me
but I feel alone
as the priest
asks for forgiveness
in your name,
that you should
be absolved
of the sins of the flesh,
the rage, the lust.
The ones left behind
grieve as you depart
but with a certainty
in their heart
that you are heading
for a better life.
And yet,
and yet...
some doubts remain.
What will your destination be?
Nirvana, Shangri-La,
Paradise?
Will your soul rise
or will your legacy be
just a handful of dust?

I think this is a question humans will never quite know the answer to Luigi, until we actually experience death. I suppose it's all about faith in what you believe.

It's always sad that loved ones left behind are the ones who suffer and left to carry on, but time is a great healer, isn't it?

I'm sure your dad is at peace though and may it continue. R I P. It's nice that you've honoured his memory.

How very true, dear Jenny, It is an eternal question that might or might not be answered one day. As you rightly say it is a matter of belief and faith.
Time is indeed a great healer and the  longer it goes on the grief becomes less intense until only the memory survives. 
Death is part of the life cycle which we acknowledge and accept. I am comforted by the fact that during those fifty years other happy occasions, like weddings and birthdays, have  occurred to brighten our days. I feel ever so lucky.

Very philosophical and at the same time practical. And as they say, rest in peace. The poem is very good it tells it just as it is.

My father's death was tragic it haunted me for many years. I loved him very much and looking back now, not with always so much great reason. He was a man and I am a man. But I think I have found forgiveness and healing.

Relationships between father and son might not always be as smooth as they should. Sometimes there is an element of competition which preclude closeness. If the age gap of the two generations is wide there might a difference in attitudes as the older person has not kept up with the times.
I remember that my father was a strict disciplinarian when I was a child but mellowed as he grew older and adapted to modern mores. 
Pleased to hear that you are now reconciled with yourself and found peace.
