Romeo was a Montague, Juliet a Capulet;
their story, told at length by the Bard,
could have been condensed in a couplet.

They loved, they died. Having been barred
by relatives engaged in hostility,
their romance was doomed to be ill-starred.

The feuding clans showed the futility
of trying to stamp out the youths’ desire
by expecting acquiescence and docility.

The star-crossed lovers played with fire
and their demise was due to a cruel twist
when Friar Laurence’s plan went haywire.

In a dark crypt the couple ceased to exist
and death denied the lovers a final tryst.

Hi Luigi,
I remember going to see Romeo and Juliet at Stratford-On-Avon and being moved to tears at the end.
Your poem captures the sense of sadness between these two lovers who are fated never to be.

Fascinated by your rhyming
Fascinated by your rhyming scheme in this Luigi! Well constructed. (and liked the capulet/couplet rhyme too!) Rhiannon

family feuds
It is heartbreaking that for such old arch enemies to be reconciled it took such a tragedy. Goes to show, rather the lesser and being humble is better in the end.
