Winter excursion

Jump in the back of the car with me,
For Higgins knows the way,
And we'll drive past the golden apple-tree
And we'll drive down the Nene Valley Way.
But soon we'll turn off the beaten track
And we'll find a muddy sward
And follow the path until we emerge
At a place where boats are moored.
There's chalets there and a broken wall
And a path under bare-boughed trees,
And we'll walk and talk as long as we
Can stand the chilly breeze.
I'll take you here again in June,
Or May perhaps if it's hot,
When the flowers are white amid the green
And the fisherman takes up his spot.
Higgins will go to the public house.
He won't care what we're doing.
And maybe we'll meet a narrowboat
From Blisworth or Stoke Bruerne.
At the Aquadrome the air will ring
With children's joyous cries,
And the waterfowl will waddle by -
And maybe I'll gaze in your eyes.
Soon the snow will obliterate
This landscape we're adoring.
The spell of the Advocaat will break
And I'll find you plain and boring.
The apples will fall to the ground and rot
And the skies will turn to grey,
So make the journey while you can,
For Higgins knows the way.
