Chapter 7
Suicidal
“So, wait…how are both of your grandparents still alive if only one of them was the original family?” Unless they had been from the same family-ew-that wouldn’t exactly make sense.
“Yeah, that’s the main reason I’m not in such a great mood. Your first love that you have sexual intercourse with, also gets the practically immortality that we have. But…you can’t make that happen unless you’re in love with them. Pretty much it’s going to be the first time you do it, unless you don’t love them. And my mom didn’t get it because it skips. My grandparents and great, great grandparents have it, but not my great parents or my mom.”
“So you have it?”
“Yes”
“This has been a really weird day.”
He laughed. I decided that, I was probably going to be immortal, so I had to ask questions. I’ll stop changing around 25. He’ll stop around 30. We could die, but not easily. It could be a bad disease. I had asked Jacob about a month later if his grandparents had told him any stories.
He said, “They had been on fire once. They told me they had played a magic trick where they stabbed a sword right through themselves and they didn’t die.”
He told me that they could also die of dehydration or starving to death, but they weren’t as needy for it.
“If we don’t have water for 12 days, we die. If we don’t have food for 28 days, we die, and if you had tried to kill yourself before, then, when you’re actually dying, you’ll feel the pain. So, if I die, I’ll feel the knife, truck, and electrocution. But it’s hard to catch a disease like this.”
I had talked to Jamie a few times, but nothing really interesting had happened in that last month. Until I got home that night.
“Hey Rabecca.” Gabriella was on the porch, “Where have you been at so much? I’ve missed you.”
“Really? Funny, ‘cause I haven’t missed you at all.”
“Rabecca, what did I ever do to you?”
“You left me, you left us. If you wouldn’t have left, Karmen wouldn’t be dead.” I almost opened the door, but she stopped me, speaking blankly.
“No, I would’ve been dead.”
“I would’ve given my life for her! Gabriella she was 5!” Gabriella’s eyes widened with information she never knew. “And you wouldn’t have died, what are you talking about!? You had your head smashed against bricks and you didn’t even faint! Now I want to know the reason why you left!?”
“Love. Left for the love and for no more hate.”
“And you actually thought you would get that by running away!? Or did you want one of us to die?”
“No—Rabecca—”
“Conversation over,” I ran inside, and up to my room. A knock came on my door a few minutes later. “Go away.” Knock, knock, knock. “Who is it?”
“Derek.”
“Oh. Come in then.” The door opened and Derek came in and sat next to me on my bed. He asked me what had been going on in the past few weeks.
“Nothing much, you?”
“Well…I’m going to war.”
I tried to scream, but I was frozen in shock. When I found my voice, I said, “Why are you going to war!? When!?” I couldn’t believe that my brother—my best friend—was going to war. I would be worried at every moment that I would never see him again. What if he got killed or got really sick and no one could do anything about it?
“March.”
“March what?” I said, my voice trembling.
“18th…I’m so sorry Rabecca.” That did it. I hated people seeing me cry. Jacob and my mom were the only two to ever see it, but I just couldn’t hold it in now.
I burst into tears. “You’re going to war on my birthday!?”
He pulled me into a hug. “Shhh…” We both jumped about 10 minutes later when my phone rang.
I pulled it out of my pocket. “Hello?”
“Rabecca, this is Jamie.”
“What!? Why are you calling me?”
“I just want you to know—”
“Hold on, sorry Jamie.” I looked over at Derek, pressing mute so Jamie couldn’t hear me. “This might be a while.” he nodded and left, shutting the door. I un-muted the phone and said, “Sorry, what did you want me to know?”
“That I love you forever. Always have, always will. Even when my mom wakes me up in the morning and finds me dead.”
“Jamie! What are you talking about!?”
“I can’t do this anymore Becca. I love you and I can’t live without you.”
“You have for over a month.” I was crying again. I couldn’t let him do this to himself.
“Why do you care? You have Jacob now.”
“Because I still love you Jamie! Please don’t do this! I’ll do anything!”
“Anything?” he asked doubtfully.
“Anything!!”
“I’ll think about it…”
“Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.”
“Come to my house.”
“Okay,” I was still crying and I was very afraid.
“Let me do whatever I want to you.”
“Anything.”
“Love you, see you in a few.”
“Bye, love you.” I hung up and buried my face in my pillow. Of course I still loved him, but not enough for that—not even enough for a kiss! All that was running through my mind as I slid through my secret door was Jacob. It was very dark outside. I saw Jamie’s car pull up by the woods. I was completely and utterly horrified. I got in the car and he smiled at me. He made a u-turn and we headed for his house…
