Life Through a Prism

Life’s journey viewed through

a backlit prism of hindsight,

refraction, strands intersecting,

splintering, dimensions of time.

From the first cry when new-born

to the last breath in old-age,

on a mountain of metaphors,

staring out at seas of silence,

imaginings of technicolor Borealis,

whales sounding in oceans,

moments of stillness, reality.

Ghosts whisper in the night,

memories of dark and light,

symposiums for the soul,

and in a soundless, sunlit vale,

I give thanks for the gift of life.

This poem is so thoughtful and reflective, like being in peaceful meditative place. Those beautiful prisms of light just set the scene for the imagination to wander and be set free.

Thanks for reading it, Jenny. The poem is intended as a meditation on life in general with an underlying sense of optimism. I didn't achieve that with its predecessor. It does make a huge difference when people read and care about the content so I am genuinely grateful. Keep well. Paul x

I enjoyed your poem. Its a great idea, looking at your life backwards through a prism, and you certainly do that very effectively. Well chosen words!

I would be interested now to see what your earlier version of this poem was, before you altered it? Can't you call the original the original, or earlier version, or Prism No. 2 (Outtake)?

Oh thank you for reading it, David. I haven't kept the original but the theme was about redemption which isn't what I wanted to say. I guess that's the beauty of having agency over our words - we can edit/amend/update to get to where we wanna go. Thanks again. Paul

This is full of beautiful things, from the rainbow of prisms at the beginning, majesty of whales, to the  peace of a sunlit valley, like a poem verson of "Wonderful World" song, positive and heartening

Our lives are never as straightforward as we might wish them to be but they would not be as interesting and colourful if they were. We all need our prism to help us appreciate the wonders that surround us.
