P) When first I saw you

When first I saw you sitting beside the old fire
Your head resting in the palm of your hand,
I felt a strange sensation,
Something I didn't understand.
Then you looked into my eyes
And greeted me with a contented smile,
My heart lifted and I was happy,
At least for a while.
But that was such a long time ago,
And smiles have been replaced by tears.
I cannot bear to lose you now,
But you've already left me to cope with my fears.
And when I'm alone in a crowded room,
And another couple sit beside the old fire,
I pray they fnd better luck than I,
And do not lose thier hearts desire.
