She is looking out of the train window, speaking into her phone: “I’m telling you we could be friends but not like that . I don’t want you to think that this could be the kind of thing that goes on and further. I just want don’t want to be tied down in any complications in anyone's life right now. We’re young and there’s no reason to get tied up and complicated.”
A man’s voice on the line but the words are indistinct.
“I think we can be friends,” she says. “I don’t think I’ll be introducing you to my kids any time soon.”
“Why would I want that?” I work full time. Financially I’m good. Economically I’m good. Emotionally I’m good. Mentally? I’m stable. I’m not a baby.”
“I work full time. I have a stable life. I picked up the phone at the station. I’m on a train going to a class. I don’t think that would be what happens.”
“You could meet me at church.”
“Well I am, now, at the start.”
“Well you have it now. I picked up the phone. We are communicating. On the phone.”
Destination reached, she stands to leave the train, conversation continuing.
