Dusby.

I was in my local supermarket recently and when I have finished shopping, if I don’t go to self-service, I usually look which sales assistant I would like to go to. Most of them I know and they know me. If possible, I usually go to the ones that I usually have a lovely chat with at the tills. While they are scanning and I am packing, we can learn lots from each other, different sales assistants, ask me different things, it depends who they are.

On this day, I chose a sales assistant, she was just with the last customer, and while she was waiting for them to pay, something caught my eyes, normally I wouldn’t have noticed, but it was two things that I saw. I noticed she has a huge ring on her forefinger, it was one of the biggest ring I have ever seen, someone wear at the tills or for casual. The second thing I noticed was that she was tapping her thumb on to the ring. I was trying to process this, I wondered if it was a camera, and that each time she touched the ring, was she taking a photo? I thought, was she using it to time in between customers?

Then it was me next, I said to her, “What is that?” She said what sounded like. “It is a dusby.” I repeated the word. I said, “What does it do?” She said, “I am praying.” I said, “You are praying?” She said, “Yes, this is instead of the beads.” I said, “I have seen the beads, but I have never seen this before.”

When I finished my shopping, I said, “What is that called again?” To me amongst the noise of the large store, it sounded like, “Dusby.” I thanked her and “Wish you a lovely weekend.” Walking to one side, I typed the word dusby into my phone, so that I could look it up when I got home.

I looked it up when I got home.

It is amazing you can always learn something new every day.

Later, still thinking about it, I thought, what it would be like if I did it in my head.

Then I realized for me that would not work, for that is not how I am used to praying. This lady when she is not at work she told me, “I use beads,”

There seems to be different spellings for the prayer ring, it is called Tasbih, or Tasbeeh.
