I’m normally good at these sensitive things.
Once I saw a girl crying on the street
it was eleven am and I said are you okay and she said no
and I said well I’ve got lots of stuff to do in town you want to help me?
And she said sure and I gestured for her to link my arm
and didn’t mean for her to actually do it
and she waited patiently at the post office
as I weighed my parcel to my friend in Australia
And on our way to buy leeks I explained I was worried I was too late
and she said she always missed birthdays too.
It was only in the pub when we stopped off for a coffee
there was a poster on the wall for a quiz night
and she said how much her mum used to love quizzes
and she was crying again
but I said ‘Look’ and gave her some advice
I can’t remember what I said but it must have been helpful because
She asked for my address and she still writes to me sometimes.
