It's cute we used to do things at the weekends

On Sunday afternoons everyone who works in the arts
had jam roly poly down their jumpers
you could set your watch by their crumbs
the derelict building that used to be a lido
used to be a cinema. An arty one
we’d get pissed on what felt at the time
like expensive wine
and slag off Hollywood blockbusters.
There was a jazz festival on the last weekend of May
everyone went to it, prentending we all liked jazz,
like this is the noise we allowi to consume our lives.
A couple of times we chose somewhere and flew there
and then we'd spend a week, all of us being there.
Once a year we’d get the train up to Edinburgh
we never got bored of the view of the castle.
We could do things then and for a while we kept saying
this is what we were doing this time last year
but now we try not to think about that at all.
There is nothing to prepare you for the early days
of loneliness there is nothing that can help
things be the way they used to be.
Norwich used to have trams and sometimes I wonder
what it would have been like to have just gone somewhere
on a tram.
