Meal for One

When breakfast is kippers
caught by fishermen two hours earlier,
grilled on freshly made bread
and served with oranges
freshly squeezed at your table.
When lunch is always brought
to your four poster bed
trays of continental chocolates
port from the year you were born
goats cheese spread over lightly toasted baguette
When your evening meal is seven courses
home made soup ladelled into your bowl
by waitresses in short skirts
who earn less in a year than the price of the bottle
that you watch them uncork
and pour into your crystal flute.
Wild animals from nearby forests
slaughtered and presented neatly
between potatoes and peas.
Then it is the cheese and pickle sandwich
you made yourself
and eat alone while watching Cheers
that you truly enjoy.
