I woke up to find we had eaten all the ice-cream
your clothes were all over the floor
and CDs were used as coasters
for glasses with remnants of the Navy Rum your dad
gave me for my birthday.
Cans of Tetley lined the windowsil
like targets at a shooting range.
Our video of Spinal Tap was in the machine
I took you to see it at the cinema
the first time we ever went out
now the case is full of cigarette ends.
The photgraph albums had been taken from the shelf,
one lay open, a picture of me and you
taken in Helsinki.
I filled the dishwasher with glasses
and spoons covered in ice-cream,
put the tablets in and as I pressed 'on'
my stomach bubbled and grrrd.
My hands throbbed in pain
as though they contained bits of my liver.
I found the shattered glass in the bathroom
it filled the glass like bubbles,
I tried to touch my fingers but they were bandaged up
like mittens.
I opened the windows to try and get rid
of my breath.
It was when I opened our bedroom door I remembered
I had been on my own
all night.
