The Day I Lost My Appendix
By Paul McCann
We walked my sisters to their nursery school
down Cambria Street with a baby in the pram .
Underneath Mammy’s voice
she whispered
“Jesus we’re late again “
and she took me by the hand .
“Good morning “
said one of the three man
who always stood on the corner .
every single day .
After dropping off my sisters
we went back down Flax Street
and I can still hear Mammy say ..
“ Is your stomach still sore son ?“
“Yes “ I said .
“ Well you better stay in your grannies, then ok .“
So she took me and the baby in the pram
to Jamaica street then she went on her way .
She went work at Rosebank
and all I did was throw up all morning.
I was sent to bed .
Mammy rushed out of work and Doctor Murray came .
“His appendix needs to come out ‘
He said .
I was taken in an ambulance to the city hospital
for an operation .
As soon as I got there
every thing seemed to be done
quickly and in desperation .
After they took out my appendix
they asked if I wanted to take them home in a jar .
I asked Daddy when he came to visit me
and he said he could take them
home in the car .
They were all just taking the mickey
as there was no need to hang on to my appendix .
I left the hospital and was soon back to myself again
after a couple of weeks .
