Door To Door Collectors
By Paul McCann
The people who came with a knock on the door collecting money as they went past like the men’s confraternity collecting the envelopes , on Sunday after mass .
Mr O’Hara who collected life insurance as he went from door to door or the man who sold shoe laces and matches and always looked like he was half tore .
The milkman called on friday night to collect the money for the week that had been , so did the boy from the cubs who run the pools with pre-picked numbers no one had seen.
There were many who came a knocking , like the tick man
and the thruppenny bit
man , the rent men , others asking for for donations for you to give as much as you can .
Beggars and other people who lived on the streets, school building funds , lemonade men , coal men , the bread man and tinkers looking for odd jobs , that’s just how it was back then .
